Respiratory masks come in many styles and types, but any mask that needs to fit tightly to the face can be tested for a good seal using a qualitative or quantitative fit test. Mask fitting NZ and workplace respiratory protection is covered under health and safety regulations in New Zealand: Health and Safety in Employment (Masks) Regulations 2013 Qualitative Fit Testing Methods: Covers all types of tight-fitting facepieces, including disposable respirators with elastomeric facepiece seals.

Mask fit-testing is where this is determined, by making sure the mask covers your nose and mouth properly. Respirators are held in place by straps or rubber bands that stretch across your head – but these tend to loosen over time. Therefore, if you’re struggling to keep the mask on while doing physical work (or anything else for that matter) then it probably does not fit correctly anymore. Mask fit testing also ensures that there is no leakage around the perimeter of the piece when it’s fitted to your face properly. Mask leakage reduces the practicality of the Respirator fit testing NZ because it sacrifices protection for comfort.
