During the Silver Age of comics, the Joker evolved from a gritty, blood-thirsty criminal mastermind into something more light-hearted. Even though he still wanted to get one over on Batman, the Clown Prince no longer looked as homicidal and sinister.

It was during this time that the backstory of the Joker’s green hair and makeup began to develop. He was supposedly exposed to chemicals that turned his hair and skin green. He wore this look for the rest of his life, including in Suicide Squad and Arkham Asylum. It also inspired his daughter Harley Quinn.
