Depending on the type of knit fabric you're using, a sleeve can have quite a bit of ease. This will allow the sleeve to fit comfortably into the armhole, preventing unattractive gathering or unintended tucks.

Stitch a row of basting stitches along the top edge of your sleeve, between the notches, using a stitch length of 3/16". This will help you distribute the sleeve cap ease evenly as you set in the sleeve.

With the fabric right-sides together, pin the sleeve to the shirt, matching up any notches and seam edges. Stitch the sleeve to the fabric, using a zigzag stitch that will stretch and secure the fabric.

You can also tack the shoulder edge to make it easier to sew the sleeve in place, but you should still stitch a zigzag stitch around the sleeve neckline, and use a larger zigzag stitch for the bottom hem. This will give the shirt a professional, custom finish.
