When the series first introduces us to alkahestry, it's revealed that Scar's intricate arm tattoo is actually an indication of a practice called Eastern Alkahestry. This is a technique that draws on both Western and Eastern Alchemy, as well as the teachings of Paracelsus (the real-world alchemist that Hohenheim was based on). It's essentially medicinal magic, but it can also be used to control chi from a distance. This is what spurs him and May to travel to Amestris, where they encounter the witty Alphonse and Edward Elric. However, the two are unaware of the other's motives.
